Club Compass Update 2024-25 Winter

Club Compass: Exciting Updates & Impact

At Compass for Kids, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. Designed for elementary students in Springfield Public Schools – District 186, Club Compass provides academic support, social-emotional learning, and enrichment activities—all in a safe and nurturing environment.

Our Program Sites

The new Club year has started smoothly! Our club sites have been busy with many returning Club kids and a handful of new faces! We are happy to have the support of our site hosts: Westminster Presbyterian Church (Graham Elementary), First Church of Brethren (Harvard Park Elementary), South Side Christian Church (Black Hawk Elementary), Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church (Dubois Elementary), and Third-Presbyterian Church (McClernand Elementary). Our dedicated mentors and staff are working hard to ensure every child gets the individualized support they need to succeed. From interactive STEM activities to literacy-building exercises, each session is designed to foster both academic achievement and personal growth.

New Enrichment Opportunities

In addition to homework help and social-emotional learning, we’ve introduced exciting new enrichment activities to keep kids engaged and inspired. Students are exploring creative arts, teamwork challenges, and leadership skills that empower them. We have had wonderful visits from our friends Central Illinois Wildlife Center, Erica Austin, Springfield Fire Department, COLE Project, APL, Springfield Police Department, Too Good For Drugs, DQ Stamps, Springfield Psychological Center, Exotic Animals, Epilepsy Advocacy Network, Illinois State Museum, and CMT Engineers

Additionally, our two Compass vans have been busy hitting the road, taking our Club kids on exciting educational field trips throughout the community.

Recently, the kids visited the Dana-Thomas House, where they explored STEM projects while admiring its stunning architecture. A trip to Kidzeum is always a favorite, and the Summer of Flight exhibit had them learning through interactive play. Another highlight was a visit to the WICS-TV studio, where they got a behind-the-scenes look at broadcasting. The green screen was a huge hit—maybe we have some future broadcasters in the making!

These experiences continue to inspire and expand our kids’ horizons, making learning both fun and memorable! 🚐✨

The Power of Mentorship

With the support of our incredible volunteers and mentors, our students are receiving even more guidance and encouragement. These meaningful relationships—fostered by both mentors and dedicated volunteers—are helping kids build confidence, resilience, and a love for learning.
